Chapter Nineteen

Azatoth thought about Lexi’s training session with a smile on her face. She gazed at the vial containing the young sorcerer’s blood. The girl had made it easy for her. She stepped across the hallway into the conference room. “Is everything ready?"

"Yes, my lady." Eric nodded briskly.

A makeshift altar had been placed in the center of the room. The demon snarled on the inside.

These mages love their rituals.

She glanced around the room at the ridiculous number of lit candles. "Is someone planning to summon a demon? You know I'm already here, right?"

A dark-haired young man approached her and smiled obsequiously as he moved closer. "Would you like me to remove them, my lady?"

"No, leave them. They're here now. Let’s not waste any more time.” She turned. "Eric, I thought you said everything was ready.”

He hurried closer. "My lady?"

"The star of the show appears to have a case of stage fright." The demon looked pointedly at the empty altar.

"I think she's making herself pretty or something." He rolled his eyes.

"I'm here." Millicent stepped into the room wearing a long black satin wrap-around gown which plunged dramatically to the naval.

Azatoth’s eyes bulged. "I don't remember saying this was a formal occasion."

The woman blushed. “I-I—”

"Never mind. You're here now. Up you get." The demon patted the altar.

Millicent paused and stared at the makeshift structure. “I think it’s a little too high for me to climb while maintaining my dignity.”

“That ship sailed a long time ago,” Eric snarked quietly.

She gave him a withering look.

Azatoth looked at the two of them. "You children carry on. Meanwhile, the shadow mage’s blood will become dry and useless.” She shook the vial of Lexi’s blood to make her point.

Millicent scrambled onto the altar and lay down. She looked from Azatoth to Eric. “Now?”

Azatoth rolled her eyes. “Yes, now.”

The woman raised her arm and muttered. The other twelve mages raised their arms and sent pulses of white energy into the center of the room.

The demon glanced at Eric. “Make sure she doesn't break the connection."

He smiled at Millicent and wound his arm sensually around hers to keep her hand in the air connected by magic to the other mages.

Within a blink, Azatoth’s eyes reverted to their black and yellow from pure excitement.

"How will you transfer the blood to me? Am I to drink it?” Millicent's voice sounded uncertain.

The demon gave her a malicious grin. "Not quite." She raised her hand and smiled as talons grew from her blood-covered fingers.

Immediately, the woman tried to jerk her arm down but Eric’s hold on her tightened.

Azatoth met Millicent’s horrified stare as she punched her fingers into the woman's stomach, exactly as she had done to Lexi.

The mage screamed.
